After testing a lot of products, we have selected the 8 best air rowing machines for 2019 which are mentioned below. In our experiments, we have found these products most consistent in performance and true value for the money.
Concept2 Model D Indoor Rowing Machine
It is also the ideal full-body workout machine to put right in your home. Beginners and professionals alike swear by this rower and have even formed a cult-like following!
I combed through hundreds of… reviews from different sources and a vast majority of them gave this rower a five-star review! Plus, I have owned a Concept2 Model D Rower for many years and I completely agree.
Air resistance functions by pulling a handle and spinning a fan flywheel. As the flywheel spins, it must displace the air in front of it, which causes the resistance.
Stamina ATS Air Rower
There is no k**b to turn or button to press to change resistance levels. The resistance level is determined by how hard you row. That is why this type of rower is categorized as variable resistance.
I wanted to emphasize this point… because a few users claimed this rower isn’t adjustable and that statement is false based on what I mentioned. It’s probable that the few users who made the false statement were unaware of how an air-rower works.
Variable resistance is great for HIIT (high intensity interval training) and Crossfit style workouts. This is because you can speed up or slow down without stopping to change any settings and the resistance will adjust automatically to your speed.
XTERRA ERG500 Air Turbine Rower
The XTERRA ERG200 is the lowest priced rowing machine in Xterra’s extensive range of rowers – well okay, just the two at last count While many may know of their treadmills and bikes, few will be familiar with these models, and while they focus on the budget end of the market this isn’t going to change.
However, any machine that has eight levels… of magnetic resistance for under $250 has to be worth a least a quick look. So here we go. We tried the ERG400 back in the summer of 2014 and found while it had some good features, the build quality wasn’t up to the task of a rigorous workout and a few weak components let it down – really badly in some cases.
The resistance mechanism is magnetic which makes it a quiet rower to use when compared to an air model. It has 8 levels of resistance selected using the k**b in the central unit beneath the handle. At this price you can’t expect heart rate programs or even a monitor to display your pulse, so the resistance levels have to be manually selected.
Concept2 Model E Indoor Rowing Machine with PM5
Although these type of machines can be quite loud, this is a top class device and is made to be very quiet, making it perfect for personal use. On top of that, the machine is foldable, so it is very easy to store, and is very light too. The machine features an ergonomic seat mounted on a monorail. The seat moves back and forth very smoothly and is virtually soundless. The chain is made of hard nickel and is almost indestructible – indeed, this machine is built to last a lifetime.
The shape of the handle is also made… to be very ergonomic and comfortable, allowing for firm grip and fine, regular strokes. Like we said, the machine is foldable, so moving it around is much more convenient, and it will take much less space, and be much more easily stored after use. It also features a wheels below the fan that will allow for more mobility.
The rower comes with a Performance Monitor 5 monitor that will allow you to track your exercises and overall improvement. These parameters include heart rate, calorie expenditure, distance traveled and the like, allowing you to fine tune your workout. It also features mini games that will help entertain you and keep you working hard as you compete against the computer.
Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RW5623
The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RW5623 Air Magnetic Rower is currently the only budget air/magnetic rower on the market. The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RW5623 Air Magnetic Rower is exactly as the name describes – a combination of air & magnetic resistance. Air and magnetic combination rowing machines are pretty rare, with only a handful of models on the market.
Due to having two resistance… types in one, the flywheel will slow down faster on the recovery and not mimic the “glide” forward of a rowing boat. To feel the same resistance as “on water” rowing you will need to buy an air-only or water rowing machine. This really isn’t a negative and some people actually enjoy the added resistance of a combination machine. You can also always set the magnetic resistance to level 1 and have mostly air resistance only.
Stamina ATS Air Rower 1405
Stamina’s ATS Air Rower 1405 produces smooth resistance with a fan flywheel. The harder you work, the stronger the resistance becomes. This resistance system makes the rowing machine suitable for virtually anyone; customers have commented that it feels just as powerful as the popular (and more expensive) Concept2 Model D.
The ATS Air Rower 1405… has simple functionality (no workout programs or heart rate monitoring) but is better made than other low-priced rowing machines. It has a metal chain in place of a cheaper tension cord, the frame is steel, and the seat glides on metal bearings instead of nylon wheels. Sized to fit most family members, the Stamina ATS Air Rower 1405 has a weight limit of 250 pounds. Stamina’s website advises that it fits people up to 6’5”.
Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RW5633
The Sunny SF-RW5633 rowing machine adds to the choice of air rowers in the sub $300 market. Air is the preferred resistance type for rowers who actually row on water as it best replicates the action and feel of a real boat. But the one drawback with this type of machine is the noise. This isn’t a problem if you use it where you won’t disturb friends, family or neighbors, but in a small room or apartment this may be a factor to consider and magnetic would be a better option.
The rowing position is okay I guess,… but the seat isn’t the most comfortable – I have found better on other budget models. The seat is quite low, but again this is common on rowers like these. If you do experience knee or low back pain, a higher seat position would be better – see the ‘Also worth a look’ section below for details of the Stamina 1130 which does have a higher seat.
The chunky handle allows for a good grip and prevents slippage, plus the wide, tilting footrests are up to the job of keeping you feet in place. So all-in-all, as long as your back and knees are in good order, and you don’t require extra padding for your butt, the SF-RW5633 has a reasonably comfortable position for a budget model.
Stamina | X Air Rower
The eye-catching red and black Stamina X Rowing Machine is among Stamina’s top deals and one of our favorites. for the price range. We rate it an 8 overall, but for value it’s a 10. The Stamina X is sized to fit almost anyone up to 250 pounds, and its resistance adjusts to fit the rider’s force. It produces smooth resistance with a fan flywheel and competes well with more expensive options.
The Stamina X is basic… you won’t pay for speakers, workout programs or heart rate monitoring — but its essentials are better than those of other budget-conscious rowing machines. It has a metal chain rather than a cord prone to snapping, its frame is steel, and its seat glides on metal bearings instead of plastic wheels. The footplates pivot to follow your natural motion.
The Stamina X Rowing Machine is simple, but it’s one of the best budget rowing machines using air resistance. It has pivoting footplates, good resistance and a helpful data monitor. The Stamina X is likely to run smoothly for many years and is a good buy.
