Sony BDP-S6700 4K Upscaling 3D Streaming
The BDP-S6700 by Sony has an impressive set of features, a slick design and a fair price. Most importantly, it has strong picture quality and lets you watch 3D discs or stream video from hundreds of services. The player upscales DVD and Blu-ray discs and plays them in a higher-resolution format.
Measuring in at 10 x 7.6 x 1.5 inches… and weighing just 2 pounds, Sony’s BDP-S6700 is lightweight and small enough to fit in your entertainment center. It does feel a little cheap since it’s mostly made of plastic, but it doesn’t look ugly. Despite being black, the case doesn’t pick up a lot of fingerprints. There are just two buttons on the front – one for power and the other to engage the disk tray.
This player is an updated version of the BDP-S6500, our number three pick for best Blu-ray player. The newer model supports wireless Bluetooth connectivity with LDAC. This means you can watch movies with wireless headphones. Like most other players, it can connect to the internet over Wi-Fi or by Ethernet. The Wi-Fi is dual band, so you get twice the bandwidth.

Yamaha AVENTAGE BD-A1060BL Blu-ray Disc Player
The focus of this product is squarely aimed at people that want the best sound reproduction they can get, while having the ability to take their movie library to the next level with 4K upscaling. After reading through the spec sheet, I could tell that this player was taking aim at a similar product, the highly-lauded Oppo BDP-103.
Now, along comes the Yamaha BD-A1060… for the same price, boasting similar specs and functions. Could this be an Oppo BDP-103 killer? Or will it be another product that is “close, but no cigar”? A true universal player should support all disc formats, but many products fail in some way or another… usually the ability to play the all but defunct DVD-A format. Looking at the labels on that are silk screened onto the player, DVD-Audio is conspicuously absent.
The BD-A1060 is a cleanly designed unit that looks similar to many other Blu-ray players on the market. A few distinguishing features meet the eye upon closer inspection. Around back we have a single HDMI output, optical and coaxial digital jacks, a network connector, IR in/out, RCA stereo analog outs and a pair of balanced XLR outs.
Panasonic DMP-BDT360 3D Wi-Fi Blu-Ray Player
The DMP-BDT360 is a mid range Blu-ray player that eschews the frills of the flagship DMP-BDT700 and step-up DMP-BDT460 to hit a wallet-friendly price, while offering a better spec than the cheaper DMP-BDT260, DMP-BDT160 and DMP-BD81.
Among its features are built-in Wi-Fi… and internet apps, which make this player an inexpensive way of bringing smart content to an older TV, alongside eye-popping hi-def movie playback of course. Panasonic’s players have always offered superb performance and functionality, but in terms of smart content they’ve played second fiddle to Samsung, Sony and LG for some time – let’s see if the DMP-BDT360 redresses the balance.
The DMP-BDT360 is an attractive machine, spruced up with curved corners and an understated black finish. The top panel feels plasticky but sports a lovely brushed texture, while the front flap keeps all the clutter hidden for a clean, minimal look. Build quality is on the lightweight side but slightly better than most decks at this price.
Onkyo BD-SP809 Blu-Ray Disc Player
The Onkyo is unusual in two regards: it is unable to replay DVD-Audio and SACD discs, but it is endowed with THX certification. Onkyo has carved itself a formidable reputation in this market, and the 809 clearly targets the company’s loyal legion of AV receiver owners.
The selection of socketry reflects… the more specific needs of its target audience, too. Unlike its rivals, the Onkyo does away with multichannel analogue outputs, retaining but a pair of stereo sockets to facilitate connection to your hi-fi system.
Build quality is certainly up to the high standards of this class. The Onkyo’s independent circuit blocks for analogue and digital circuitry help to reduce electromagnetic interference, while items that generate mechanical vibration, such as the motor assembly, are directly coupled to the stiff chassis.
OPPO BDP-103 (SACD / DVD-Audio / 3D Blu-ray)
Just when you thought everything that a Blu-ray Disc player can do, or has been done, along comes the BDP-103 from OPPO Digital which not only take audio and video performance up a notch, and adds some additional connectivity options not found on most players. This is definitely a high-end player.
The BDP-103 plays 2D and 3D Blu-ray Discs,… provides both 1080p and 4K upscaling, and not only provides two HDMI outputs, but also adds two HDMI inputs for additional connection flexibility.
However, you won’t find any analog video outputs, as both composite and component video outputs have been eliminated, save for a composite video output that only displays the onscreen menu system if needed for diagnostic purposes.
Yamaha BD-S681 Blu-ray Disc Player
Upscale your content to four times the resolution of 1080p with your 4K display and the black Yamaha BD-S681 4K-Upscaling Wi-Fi and 3D Blu-ray Disc Player. In addition to handling standard and 3D Blu-ray media, the BD-S681 features integrated UHD upscaling technology to provide optimized image quality from DVD and Blu-ray video sources.
This model’s HDMI output supports… high-resolution audio formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio for a dynamic multi-channel surround sound experience. The USB port allows you to connect devices such as thumb drives for easy playback of multimedia files. There’s also a digital optical audio output for feeding multi-channel sound to audio systems without HDMI.
Built-in Wi-Fi capability allows wireless connection with your household wireless router, simplifying system connections and allowing you to enjoy network audio and music streaming services. If no Wi-Fi router is available, the Wi-Fi Direct feature not only allows you to stream music and movies directly from your mobile device, but also control your Blu-ray Disc player using the AV Controller app or MusicCast Controller app.
