Printing is very much still alive, as is demonstrated by the sheer variety of printers you can buy these days. As has been the case for many years, the single biggest consideration when buying a printer for a home or small office is whether it’s a laser or inkjet device. With laser, the powdered ink (toner) is essentially melted into the paper, which makes it far more resilient and resistant to running. Laser printers are also far quicker once they’ve warmed up, so are better suited to high-volume work.

HP PageWide Pro 477dw Color Multifunction
HP’s innovative AIO combines some of the key advantages of laser and inkjet printers, including excellent print quality for both text and graphics, plus a low cost per page. When is an inkjet printer not an inkjet printer? The answer might be: When it functions almost indistinguishably, from the outside, like a laser one. his model also has a very competitive page cost, due in part to the PageWide technology.
HP’s revised line of inkjet-based PageWide printers, introduced in 2016, attempts to meld the best qualities of inkjet and laser printers, and it’s mostly successful. So if you tend to print a fair number of pages each month, you should be able to recoup the higher purchase price over the life of the printer. Despite its innovative print engine inside, the HP PageWide Pro 477dw looks unassuming from the outside.
Now, the concept itself is not new; PageWide debuted a few years ago in HP’s line of Officejet Pro X printers using the same core printing technology. But the concept and aims are the same. You get the superior graphics print quality that we associate with inkjet printers, as well as the superior text printing quality and fast single-pass page printing that we associate with laser printers.
HP LaserJet Pro M281fdw All in One
HP’s LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw is an entry-level color laser all-in-one (AIO) printer similar in capacity, features, and price to our Editors’ Choice Canon Color imageClass MF634Cdw. The M281fdw is smaller and lighter than the Canon model, and its running costs are a little lower. However, the Canon MF634Cdw prints better and comes with a stronger feature set, including a larger touch screen and an auto-duplexing automatic document feeder (ADF).
Which the M281fdw lacks. Even so, the M281fdw prints well overall, making it a decent alternative to the Canon MF634Cdw as a low-volume color laser AIO for home-based small offices and small workgroups, or for personal use. Paper handling for the M281fdw is about average. You can load up to 251 sheets split between two trays, a 250-sheet main drawer and a 1-sheet override slot located at the top of the main cassette.
The Canon MF634Cdw, on the other hand, supports only 151 sheets, split between a 150-sheet drawer, and a 1-sheet bypass. The M281fdw’s ADF holds up to 50 pages, but it cannot flip them to scan both sides automatically. Surprisingly, neither does the more robust. In contrast, the Canon MF634Cdw’s ADF is not only auto-duplexing, but also a single-pass auto-duplexer, meaning that the scanning mechanism has two sensors.

HP Laserjet Pro M252dw Wireless Color Printer
The HP Color LaserJet Pro M252dw is a small office or home office (SOHO) A4 colour laser printer with duplex printing, a colour touchscreen and compact form. It can be used over a wired network or wirelessly as with quick setup via NFC for some mobile devices. The case is brand new, sporting a slightly wedge-shaped, white finish with a dark grey inset on top for the output tray.
A flip-up, 73mm colour touchscreen gives good control of the printer and can also be used to display photo thumbnails or HP’s online apps. It’s nicely sensitive and supports swipes and touches. On the opposite side of the top cover is a socket for USB drives, protected by a rather flimsy-looking, spring-loaded flap. This is a more convenient position than the typical front panel socket.
At the bottom of the front panel is the main paper tray, which has a capacity of just 150-sheets. We’ve complained before that this capacity is too low for even a small office, where 250 sheets would be a better compromise. Even low-end inkjet printers offer this kind of capacity. There’s no option for an extra tray, either, though there is a single-sheet multipurpose feed, directly above the main tray.
