When it comes to choosing cold-weather skin care, there’s so much to consider (and a lot that can go wrong). And we all know there’s nothing like dry, cracked digits (and those hangnails!) to bring your manicure down. To make things a bit easier, we’ve rounded up some of our top hand cream picks.
O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Hand Cream
O’Keeffe’s recommends that the hand cream be used up to several times a day, such as after washing your hands or bathing. They especially recommend it be used overnight.
It makes your hands feel… slightly waxy. It doesn’t leave my hands feeling greasy, but there is a very slight lingering waxiness feeling. I applied a sparing amount on my hands as directed, but even a little coverage leaves a detectable waxy film. I suppose this is how the hand cream helps your skin retain moisture.
Overall, I do like the hand cream, and absolutely recommend it. I would rather not have to use it, but my hands are in bad shape. The very slight waxy feeling is not unpleasant, and I intent to experiment with applying even smaller amounts to see if it goes away.
Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for Dry/Sensitive Skin
Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream contains a superior system of extra-strength emollients and humectants clinically proven to bind water to the skin and prevent moisture loss.
The result is long-lasting… relief for even severely dry skin. The non-greasy formula is excellent for hands, feet, elbows, knees, and any other areas that require intensive moisturization.
MIZON All In One Snail Repair Cream
Mizon All in One Snail Repair Cream is a skin cream that claims to help heal damaged skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, brighten skin tone, reduce acne marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), moisturize, protect skin from environmental damage, and increase elasticity. That’s a lot of claims for a single product!
There are lots of plant extracts… in this formula, all of which provide either antioxidant or anti-inflammatory benefits, and in some instances, both. The extracts are nice, but here are the active ingredients that really stood out for me:
“All in One” indicates that this product is meant to take the place of multiple products in a skincare routine, but the fact that it isn’t moisturizing, and that it’s only the first step in a multiple product skincare line suggests otherwise.
Aveeno Intense Relief Hand Cream For Dry Skin
Aveeno’s Intense Relief Hand Cream is fragrance-free and a great value. It didn’t absorb as quickly as other products, according to our consumer testers, but it perked up dry hands in GHRI tests. One volunteer said, “It made my hands look younger!” Others liked the consistency and “silky” feel on their hands.
This lotion got the lowest… score in our test for absorbing into skin easily, but our volunteers were split, with some loving its feel and others calling it “greasy” and “slippery.”
L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream
These quickly-absorbed lotions are enriched with nourishing shea butter to lock moisture into the skin for silky-smooth hands. The award-winning Shea Butter Hand Cream contains 20 percent shea butter to intensely hydrate. Coconut oil, honey, and marshmallow root extracts are blended with shea to create a powerful formula for supreme softness.

Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream Fragrance Free
A high level of glycerin attracts and locks in moisture, keeping hands hydrated after repeated washings and in harsh, cold climates. It’s heavy and a bit sticky, but the workhorse formula really soothes severe dryness.
Translucent gel-cream;… available in scented (soft and powdery) and fragrance-free formulas
Jack Black Industrial Strength Hand Healer
Although the cream is technically fragrance-free, it smells bright and clean, like eucalyptus leaves, thanks to a natural essential oil. Once absorbed, the rich formula leaves hands thoroughly quenched.
