Rinnai RL94iN Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater

Rinnai RL94iN Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater $1,187.00

Rinnai has improved upon and surpassed their last offering in that they now have included a built-in Circ-Logic (TM) recirculation program that is capable of cycling an external pump (sold separately) at preset intervals and temperatures to maximize efficiency and comfort. Most homes do NOT require the recirculation of domestic hot water therefore an external pump is NOT required for a typical installation of this water heater. Another new innovation included in the RL94iN is a leak detector.

Upon determining there is a water leak,MORE the unit shuts off the water to limit property damage. Also new for the RL94iN is a temperature lock. This prevents accidental or unauthorized changes to the water temperature. Additionally, an enhanced scale detection feature has been incorporated to lessen the possibility of serious long term damage to the unit due to excessive scale deposits.

Just like in the previous model, the RL94iN includes a Webstone Lead-free Isolator Valve Kit (Model EXP 2). New for this version is an upgraded, door mounted controller (Model MC-91-2US). You’ll stop planning your mornings and evenings around your hot water heater and set your own schedule while enjoying hot water from up to five plumbing and appliance outlets simultaneously.

PrecisionTemp RV-550 Tankless Water Heater

PrecisionTemp RV-550 Tankless Water Heater $1,175.00

For a long time I have recommended the RV-500 Tankless Hot Water Heater from Precision Temp, but recently I found myself no longer being able to recommend it. I don’t normally do product reviews, but the RV500 is one of those appliances that a lot of tiny housers use and people wanting to build are planning on installing. So I thought I’d share my experience here.

To be transparent, I owned the RV550,MORE which is very similar to the 500, the only difference is the 550 vents out the bottom via a pipe, where the 500 vents out a side panel. While there are technical differences, they’re almost identical, save the vent method. Most people don’t know about the 550 as its just a product variant, it’s fair to say its the same series, hence me reviewing this under the RV500 title because that’s what most people will search.

I purchased the unit in 2013 after doing a lot of research about the unit. It seemed like my options where this unit or an Atwood variant that honestly didn’t look that great as an option.

Takagi T-H3-DV-N Condensing High Efficiency

Takagi T-H3-DV-N Condensing High Efficiency $1,143.90 1

There are certain things you expect with a tankless water heater: endless hot water, compact sizing, and on-demand usage are just three popular options. How come so many models struggle to meet these basics?

The Takagi T-H3-DV-N Condensing Indoor Tankless WaterMORE Heater doesn’t struggle at all. Not only will this appliance help you to save space and conserve energy, but it will give you all the hot water you need – even if you have a large family to support.

This high-efficiency natural gas tankless water heater meets current rules that are in place for ultra-low NOx emissions established in 2012 by SCAQMD rules. It is one of the few tankless heaters that really can provide a whole-home solution for multiple people.

Noritz EZTR40-NG Indoor Tankless Water Heater

Noritz EZTR40-NG Indoor Tankless Water Heater $1,299.99 1

Noritz just released this very cool new tankless unit, and I was immediately impressed when I saw what this model offered. The new EXTR40 tankless water heater is meant to easily replace an existing 40 (or even 50) gallon tank water heater. If you have an existing home, and want to go tankless it can be a rather expensive endeavor.

The Tankless units are 2-3x more expensiveMORE than standard Tank models, plus you often have extra plumbing labor to do a changeover. The plumber often has to up-size the gas line from a 1/2″ line to a larger 3/4″ (or even 1″) line. The water connections often need re-worked, and there are often flue details to be worked out. This new model from Noritz has several things that make it an easy (thus the name EZ) replacement product.

However, I would expect to get close to double the life out of a Tankless unit compared to a tank model. Tank units have a 10-15 year life expectancy. Tankless I would expect to see a 20-25 year service life. I think this model is a no-brainer for replacing your existing tank.

AO Smith ATI-540H-N Condensing Residential/Light Commercial $1,283.05
