While every PC user needs a router, gamers have more specialized needs in this area. Some gamers are of the opinion that all gaming should be done via a wired connection, and all routers support this connection route. Wired is certainly the ideal situation, but the fact is many of us do not want to be tethered to a network cable at all times. Here’s where the right networking hardware can make a real difference.
Google Wifi system (set of 3) – Router replacement
Google Wifi is easy to use and a breeze to set up. It has strong Wi-Fi coverage and fast speed. It costs a lot less than other mesh Wi-Fi systems. Google Wifi is the best Wi-Fi system on the market. if you want to extend fast internet to every corner of your home, the Google Wifi is the best device to do it. You just need two things: An internet-connected iOS or Android mobile device, like a phone or a tablet. A Google account, which you can get for free.
This is because, unlike most routers,… there’s no web-based interface and the new Wi-Fi system can only be set up and controlled via the new Google Wifi mobile application. Once set up, the Google Wifi will stay connected to Google at all times and will log into your Google account each time you want to manage it.
Google says the Wifi doesn’t collect user activity data, like what sites you’re visiting. By default, it appears to collect only hardware-, app- and network-related information. However, you can turn this off in the Privacy section of the settings. Still, a constant connection to Google is required. That’s a dealbreaker for some.
Netgear R6700-100NAS Nighthawk AC1750
Get ready to game and stream with the Nighthawk AC1750 Smart WiFi router. With up to 1750Mbps and a powerful dual core processor, you’ll be ready to support all your activities online. Beamforming+ and external antennas deliver range to spare so you can stay connected throughout your home. Control your home network with voice commands using the Google® Assistant.
It’s a fantastic router, hands down.… I would recommend this router to anyone who has been frustrated by slow wireless speeds or dead zones in their house. Netgear’s R6700 is a large router that packs a 1Ghz dual-core processor that’s designed for large homes. It is a mid-range router that supports up to 450Mbps on the 2.4Ghz frequency band and up to 1300Mbps on the 5Ghz frequency band. It measures 11.22 x 7.26 x 1.97 in (HWD) and weighs a little over 1.6 pounds.
The R6700 is part of the Nighthawk series and uses the same housing design as its bigger brother, R7000. The R6700 is very sturdy and it has it has a wide base with rubber feet so it won’t slip and slide all over a surface. Netgear’s nighthawk routers can be wall-mounted if space is limited.
NETGEAR Orbi Whole Home Mesh WiFi System
Sometimes, no amount of prime router placement can get you decent Wi-Fi coverage throughout your house. Netgear isn’t the first to try and solve this problem, but its new Orbi Wi-Fi system tackles it pretty handily. Comprised of one Router device and one (or more) Satellite device, the Orbi system broadcasts an unimpeded Wi-Fi signal to every room in the house.
It sounds like an empty promise… from a 2am infomercial, but we can gladly report that Orbi can do exactly what it says on the tin. Regardless, the Orbi is still mighty expensive compared to your average router. So, how well does Netgear Orbi justify its price? Pretty damn well, actually. While it’s referred to as a single product, Netgear Orbi is technically comprised of two parts: the Orbi Router and the Orbi Satellite. Both 1.96-pound (889g) devices are nearly identical, adorable pylons of white matte plastic.
Before installing the Orbi system, streaming anything via Amazon Fire TV in the living room from the office-bound router was a stilted experience with buffering aplenty. And, forget trying to get much done from the finished basement. With the Orbi replacing that router and a Satellite in the living room, those problems are 100% eliminated.
eero Home WiFi System (1 eero + 2 eero Beacons)
The second-generation Eero Home WiFi System is even easier to set up than the first, thanks to wireless access points called Beacons that plug straight into AC outlets. It’s also more powerful, thanks to a new Qualcomm mesh Wi-Fi router chipset and a tri-band Wi-Fi radio. The router delivered triple-digit throughput in every room of my 2800-square-foot home—more than enough bandwidth to support several HD video streams simultaneously.
But when you look at the benchmark charts below,… you’ll see that while the new Eero (I’ll call it Eero 2 from here) is much faster than the first-generation product, it was the fastest mesh router in the field of eight that I’ve tested to date in only one location in my home, and that was with a MacBook Pro as the client.
An ambient light sensor on the Beacon will automatically turn the nightlight on when it’s dark, and the light’s intensity will scale with the room’s light. You can use the Eero app to program it to turn and off at designated times. You can dial the time in precisely enough, but the schedule will be the same for every day of the week.
ASUS AC3100 WiFi Dual-band Gigabit Wireless Router
The Asus RT-AC88U router has eight superfast Gigabit LAN ports, speedy Wi-Fi performance and lots of useful features. Its Web interface is smartly designed and easy to use. You’ll pay a lot for the Asus RT-AC88U, but it has everything you’d want in a router. If you have the money, this is the router to get. The RT-AC88U is Asus’ latest true dual-band router, not to mention the best router the company has had to offer so far.
It’s the first home router with eight Gigabit LAN… ports with additional support for Dual-WAN (one of the LAN ports can be converted into a WAN port) and port aggregation (two of the LAN ports can be combined into a single superfast connection.) On top of that, it has a robust and fun-to-use Web interface, a slew of excellent network-monitoring features, a built-in VPN server, and the ability protect your home network from malware and intruders.
What’s more, the router supports MU-MIMO, and includes unique features for gamers. In all, I’ve never seen a router with more to offer than the RT-AC88U. Performance-wise, the router excelled in my tests, delivering top Wi-Fi data rates, long range and a stable wireless signal.
Linksys Velop Tri-band Whole Home WiFi Mesh System
The Linksys Velop delivers fast Wi-Fi speed over a large area. Its hardware is well designed, and the system is generally easy to use. The Velop is an effective mesh Wi-Fi router, but it doesn’t have a competitive edge due to its high cost and limited feature set. The Linksys Velop — Belkin’s first home mesh Wi-Fi system — finds itself right between the Google Wifi and Netgear Orbi in terms of performance.
There is room in this new category… for routers of different product tiers, but with middling performance, the fewest features and the highest price of those competitors, the Velop is hard for me to recommend. Like all Wi-Fi systems, you use one unit of the Velop as the main router to connect to an internet source, such as a broadband modem. After that, if you have a large home, you put the rest of the nodes one or two rooms away from the main unit to automatically extend your Wi-Fi coverage.
The setup process is easy as long as you have smart phone, and like many other mesh routers, there are no alternative set up options like a web interface. Just download the Linksys app, follow the instructions to register and log in with a Linksys account the rest is self-explanatory.

ARRIS Surfboard Docsis 24X8
If you can’t wait for Comcast’s next-gen Advanced Gateway, Arris has something that you can get now, the SurfBoard SVG2482AC Voice Gateway, a combo box that includes a fast cable modem and an advanced Wi-Fi router in a single box. In many ways this is a major upgrade to the SBG6782-AC Surfboard eXtreme that came out a few years ago.
The new gateway now supports… voice and gigabit broadband speed, and as one of the first gateways on the market, features Reference Design Kit-B (RDK-B) technology. RDK-B is an integrated open-source software stack that provides a common framework for customers’ equipment such as set-top boxes, modems/routers/gateways and other devices to communicate with service providers.
The technology enables service providers to standardize certain elements of these devices, letting them quickly launch their own new services or customize applications. For now, thanks to RDK-B, Comcast can actively update the SVG2482AC Gateway’s firmware — a process normally done by the hardware vendor — to improve its performance or add more services.
